Red Routes in Walsall

Walsall has already delivered four Red Routes with the final three routes of Package 1 on the way.

A34 South Birmingham – Completed August 2008

The project was completed in August 2008. The scheme consisted of, upgrades to pedestrian crossing facilities, junction improvements (Walstead Road / Bell Road) and new landscaping and tree-planting to replace a number of trees that have been damaged by traffic pollution. This scheme was delivered in conjunction with the Route 51 Bus Showcase scheme and included the introduction of two stretches of bus lanes. The scheme then continues into Sandwell and Birmingham.

A4148 Littleton Street/Pleck Road (Town Centre Transport Package) – Completed Spring 2009

This scheme was part of the wider transport improvements made to Walsall town centre. The Red Route restrictions run from Rolling Mill Street to the Arboretum junction.

A454 Black Country Route – Completed Spring 2008

This scheme consists of a Red Route Clearway running from M6 Junction 10 to The Keyway Roundabout (Willenhall Road).

A41/A4444 Black Country Spine Road – Completed Spring 2008

This scheme consists of a Red Route Clearway running from Lunt Roundabout along the A4444 until the Moxley Junction where it continues along the A41 Oxford Street until the border with Wolverhampton.

A34 North Stafford Road/Green Lane – Started January 2010

Prior to the start of the scheme improvements to the junction of Hospital Street / Green Lane / Old Birchills was completed, this included the realignment of the side roads and the introduction of traffic signals. Work has begun on the other elements of the scheme, these are to include; improvements to the junctions of Green Lane/Leamore Lane and Bloxwich Road/Leamore Lane/Harden Road to improve safety and capacity, improvements to pedestrian crossing facilities, increases and improvements to parking, loading and disabled facilities along Bloxwich High Street. This scheme will be completed in conjunction with the Route 301 Bus Showcase scheme, enhancing provisions for all road users along the route.

A454 Wolverhampton Road – Starts May 2010

This scheme runs from M6 Junction 10 to Pleck Road Junction. It will consist of improvements to traffic signals and pedestrian crossing facilities and provisions for residents parking. This scheme will be completed in conjunction with the Route 529 Bus Showcase scheme, enhancing provisions for all road users along the route.

A4148 Broadway/Broadway West/Pleck Road/Bescot Road – Start September 2010

This scheme runs along the entire length of the A4148 which is Walsall town centre’s ring road. This scheme will link to the completed A4148 Littleton Street/Pleck Road project, to ensure that the route which encompasses Walsall is kept flowing freely. Improvements will be made to pedestrian crossing facilities, increase in capacity of some key junctions and the provision of parking and loading bays.
