Rights of Way Improvement Plans

Local highway authorities are required to publish Rights of Way Improvement Plans (RoWIPs) by November 2007.  The purpose is to improve existing Rights of Way, provide new links where necessary together with better information and management, in order to benefit pedestrians, cyclists, equestrians and people with mobility difficulties.

The preparation and adoption of RoWIPs, and their integration with our LTP2, will provide another opportunity to maximise benefits.  Greater use of Rights of Ways will help reduce congestion and improve accessibility to local facilities and public transport; as well as contribute towards cleaner air, safer roads and a better quality of life.

Officers responsible for the LTP and Rights of Ways are working together to ensure that all the  RoWIPs are closely integrated with each other and the LTP2.  Officers are also working with adjoining county councils to ensure that Rights of Ways which cross administrative boundaries are fully incorporated into each RoWIP.  More information about RoWIPs can be found in the Annexes.
