Opportunities to Improve Safety

Road safety raises issues of scale and complexity, and requires a coordinated effort and the use of both revenue and capital resources. Our strategy for Road Safety is detailed in the  Annexes and will be tackled through:

  • analysis of problems and trends
  • targeted improvements using capital and revenue resources
  • management of the maintenance and operation of existing systems
  • innovation and evaluation of new ideas
  • adoption of safe design
  • auditing of proposals
  • training for all highway users

Opportunities to improve road safety also arise through partnership with Government, the West Midlands Police Authority and Highways Agency, and through working corporately with other service areas, such as Education and Planning.

Evidence

Coventry City Council allocates resources from its own annual budget to 'perceived safety schemes'.  These are projects where local residents perceive that a safety problem exists although no accidents have been recorded.  This proactive approach to road safety is believed to contribute to safer roads, but it also improves residents’ quality of life by raising their confidence when using roads in their locality.
